Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a piano tuning take?

Depending upon how long it has been since your piano was last tuned, the process takes from 2 to 3.5 hours. The longer it has been since your piano was tuned, or if it has been in extreme conditions (significant temperature and humidity changes), the tuning process will be longer.

How often should I tune my piano?

Almost all piano manufacturers suggest that a new piano 4 times within the first year, and 2 times a year each year following. At a minimum, a piano should be tuned at least once a year.

No worries if your piano has not been held to these tuning standards! There is no piano that is too far gone to be saved. Tom’s Tuning is here to help.

Can keeping a piano untuned cause permanent damage?

Letting a piano get very out of tune isn’t good for the piano, but the damage done to the piano is rarely irreparable.

What is a pitch raise or pitch adjustment?

A pitch raise or pitch adjustment brings the tone of the piano strings back to the international pitch standard of A-440. Completing a pitch raise usually requires the tuner to make 2, 3, or even more passes/tunings for every piano string.
